The Camden Society

Who They Are

The Camden Society was started by a group of parents in a Camden living room in 1966 with the purpose of providing eachother with emotional and practical support. Before long the group began campaigning for the rights of people with learning difficulties, and for a more inclusive soceity. By the mid 1980s The Camden Society had become a registered charity, offering support and training for people with learning difficulties. The services they provide have continued to mulitply and now extend to include people with physical disabilities, mental health needs, and those who need additional support to maintain their independence.

What They Do

Among many other projets the Camden Society manages a chain of social enterprise cafes accross London which take the name Unity Kitchen or Unity Coffee. Set up with Think.Eat.Drink's own Jamie Granger-Smith, the purpose of these cafes was to provide training and jobs for those in need of support. Each of these establshments has its own identity and specialities, though they share a strong focus on enviromental sustainability and ethical business practice.
