Issue 1- 2012

Welcome to the very first edition of our new monthly newsletter. We are very proud and excited to announce the launch of our new website and our pioneering Think.Eat.Drink Membership Scheme, T.E.D Members, which officially launched at The Hub Kings Cross on 18th October. 

The idea for the Membership Scheme came to Think.Eat.Drink's Jamie Grainger-Smith following the success of Acorn House (the UK's first eco-friendly award-winning restaurant) and Waterhouse Restaurant which came runner-up in the Observer Food Monthly Awards in October 2012 for sustainability. The aim of the project is to inspire and shape the future of the whole hospitality industry.

We envisage a future where all operators providing food and drink including restaurants, cafes, bars, theatres and hotels, can tap into this unique concept and purchase and work with a network of responsible partners and suppliers, encompassing everything from energy to insurance, banking to packaging and of course - food and drink.

A little bit more background on Jamie: He co-founded Fifteen Restaurant with Jamie Oliver and even more recently has worked with HRH The Prince of Wales' charity Start UK on creating a stunning pop-up experience in Lancaster House based around sustainability. Also have a look further down to see what Jamie has been working on with the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, which is the legacy park following the Olympic Games.

Think.Eat.Drink Members Launch Event

 We had over 100 guests from the world of sustainability and the hospitality industry, including some of our Founder Members: Cafédirect, Ecover and London Linen to name but a few. Delicious food and service from Think.Eat.Drink Events and scrumptious organic wine from one of our founder members Vinceremos was served by staff from theBlue Marble Trust. The Trust was set up by Jamie and The Shoreditch Trust back in 2009, to teach youngsters skills for life and how to develop a long and fulfilling career in the eco side of the hospitality industry.

 Jamie also introduced the concept of the T.E.D Members Scheme with Simon Goldsmith (also a Founder Member) as they explained T.E.D’s sustainability online self-assessment system.

Every month we’ll feature one of our Founder Members. Cafédirect, our Founder Member for coffee and tea, was born during a crisis.  When an international coffee agreement which had fixed global prices according to the cost of production collapsed in 1989, middlemen swooped in to buy up the coffee. The lives of millions of smallholder farmers around the world were in jeopardy as they were left with no choice but to sell their harvests at rock bottom prices

Think.Eat.Drink consults on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park

In other news at Think.Eat.Drink, Jamie is lending his expertise to consult on the food and beverage strategy for the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (QEOP), which is the legacy park after the Olympic Games. This includes consulting on various aspects from spatial arrangement, physical environments, right the way through to operational requirements, design, logistics, etc. This is a great challenge and one that he is immensely proud to be involved in.
