Who they are
Fresh Direct was born in 1966 as a mobile fresh fruit and veg company consisting of one member of staff: John Harris, who trawled Bicester selling fresh produce out of his silver Austin 3 van. The company has grown some since then, today taking over 35,000 orders weekly, but still a family run business, their commitment to selling only the finest, freshest produce remains. With a keen focus on environmental and ethical issues, Fresh Direct have a number of "green" policies in place to ensure that they make the minimum negative impact on the environment, and maximum positive impact on the community. The extent of their recycling is quite astonishing, turning waste produce into animal feed or compost, and even converting the glycol from their warehouse fridges into air-conditioning systems for their offices. They have also invested in electronic delivery vehicles to minimise their carbon footprint, and hand pick growers who offer a range wide enough to allow them to amalgamate their deliveries, further reducing emissions.
What they do
What they don't do would invite shorter pros here. With products ranging from fruit and veg, to meat, to dairy, and their services including gourmet foraged and wild foods, prepared to order ingredients, produce especially sourced from farms local to those clients who favour supporting local business and serving local produce, as well as ready to serve dishes from the Chefs in the Fresh Direct Kitchen (a new venture) it is no wonder that they supply some of the most prestigious restaurants and businesses in the country, among them Jamie Oliver's Jamie's Italian, department stores Harvey Nichols and Harrods, the Marriott Hotels and the Ministry of Defence.
