Bibendum was born when a group of friends started selling a mixture of classed growths and unusual bottles to private clients. Those friends are still here. In 1985 Michael Saunders opened their first trade account: Odettes, just up the road. Bibendum are still supplying them two decades on & today sell over 1.5m cases of wine to nearly 3000 On Trade customers, from Michelin star restaurants to independent pubs and international sporting venues.
In 1999 the shop shut its doors for the final time as their private client business headed into mail order and later online. This year Bibendum celebrated their 30th Birthday in style with a Party, complete with cakes, streamers and party hats, for their customers at their ‘Just Add Bibendum’ Annual Tasting.
Today, Bibendum is the UK’s leading independent wine merchant selling to all sectors of the UK trade. Their success is based not only on their stand-out wine range but also the way they work with their customers to form true partnerships. Their approach is tailored to the unique needs of each individual customer and focused on how they can improve their wine offering to ensure greater profits from the category within their business. They believe the strength of their business lies in their people. Their philosophy is very much that the hard work starts, rather than finishes, when the bottles are delivered.
Fair and Ethical Trading
At Bibendum they take these issues very seriously and play a leading role on the UK Fairtrade Wine Committee, which addresses the issues surrounding the sale and promotion of Fairtrade wines in this country.
Their approach focuses on building true partnerships with customers, helping them increase sales through the latest consumer insights, outstanding training and innovative marketing and design.
Bibendum is ISO14001 certified
ISO 14001 is the leading international certification for environmental management systems (EMS). It is only awarded to organisations which have undergone a rigorous auditing process evaluating the effectiveness of their environmental policies.
Named Green Company of the Year
Their industry leading Vivid team saw their environmental policies rewarded as Bibendum were named Green Company of the Year in The Drinks Business Green Awards and the IWC Corporate Social Responsibility Award.
Their Charity – Action Against Hunger
